Excerpt - A lookback

Dr Nilay S. Nimbalkar DMRD, DNB

The IACI is a camaraderie of cardiac imaging professionals or alma mater of new-age cardiac imaging in India. These words may look fancy or embellished. Nevertheless, the IACI (Indian Association of Cardiac Imaging), a community of 700 plus members discussing, encouraging, learning and teaching various aspects of cardiac imaging, is a dream come true for its enthusiastic members.

What started as lunch meetings of like-minded cardiac imagers in 2010, IACI is now like pottery taking a beautiful shape.  The goals were simple as put by the past presidents Drs Elizabeth Joseph and Sanjaya Vishwamitra:

  • Educate yourselves and others, cultivate best practices in our institutions and help others, foster forums and discussion panels to link Indian cardiac imagers and the world together, clear doubts, clarify protocols, challenge friends and make cardiac imaging fun;
  • Give opportunities to young imagers, both in age and experience;
  • Engage our imaging society with other Cardiac Imaging associations;
  • A holistic understanding of cardiac imaging is for the betterment of the patient.

Following were the annual and midterm conferences held in the past with their organizing secretaries putting lots of efforts in conceptualizing and executing it to the best.

Dr Gurpreet Gulati is delivering a lecture at the first IACI annual conference held in New Delhi. The first meeting of the IACI was in New Delhi from 23rd -25th September 2011. The theme of the meeting was “Essentials of Cardiac CT and MRI“. There were approximately 120 attendees. Experts from the country dealt with topics spanning primary and advanced aspects of cardiac imaging. A hands-on Cardiac CT workshop was also a part of this conference. It was during this meeting that the first Newsletter of the IACI was released.

Dr Hemant Telkar and other dignitaries are lighting the ‘Samai‘ at the 2013 Annual conference of IACI  at Mumbai.

Dr Rajesh Kannan organized a paediatric cardiac imaging conference in Kochi in April 2014 as the first midterm conference. Dr Shi Joon Yoo from SickKids, Toronto was the keynote speaker, and Dr S. Bruce Greenberg, president of NASCI, gave online lectures during the conference.

Dr Saugata Sen and a team of speakers at the 4th annual conference in Kolkata. Concept of a hands-on workshop in cardiac imaging became a success during this conference.

Christian Medical College, Vellore, hosted the 5th Annual National Conference of the IACI on 22nd & 23rd October 2014, which was endorsed by the Society for Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (SCMR).

Over two hundred doctors from across the country and overseas participated in this event. The main objective of this Conference was to enhance and update the knowledge of the delegates in the field of cardiac imaging, particularly in cardiac MRI. Dr Elizabeth Joseph, the then President of IACI, was the organising secretary and Dr Shyamkumar N.K. & Dr Sridhar Gibikote were the organizing chairpersons.

The topics included sessions on stress imaging, viability, cardiomyopathy and coronary MRA, to name a few. Out of the 20 speakers, the international representation was by Dr Matthias Friedrich from McGill University Health Centre, Montreal, Canada; Dr Ron M. Jacob from Lancaster General Hospital, University of Pennsylvania Health System and Dr Yuchi Han from the University of Pennsylvania. Interactive sessions, including workshops and interesting case discussions, were much appreciated by the delegates. An interactive quiz completed the conference. There were a total of 24 poster presentations by both consultants and postgraduates.

The IACI MIDTERM CME 2017 was at Hotel Abu Sarovar Portico in Chennai. The Organizing Secretary was Dr S. Babu Peter, Professor of Radiodiagnosis, Madras Medical College along with IACI President, Dr, Sanjaya Vishwamitra and IACI Secretary Dr Hemant Telkar. Over 250 delegates attended the CME. The IACI faculty from all over the country shared their knowledge with delegates.

Seventh annual IACI was at Seven Hills hospital, Mumbai from September 14th to 16th 2017.

There were five workshops, including three IACI level I certification workshops.

Adult coronary CT, Paediatric cardiac imaging and adult cardiac MRI level I certification programs were spearheaded by Dr Hemant Telkar, Dr Rajesh Kannan and Dr Vimal Raj respectively.

One full-day workshop was organized exclusively for technologists.

A half-day workshop on echocardiography attracted cardiologists and general physicians.

Dr Mark Westwood (Chairman of education committee) and Dr Ron Jacob from SCMR and Dr.Ravibathina from CTCVI were special guest speakers.

From the 7th annual conference in Mumbai, the IACI picked up the pace and the 8th annual conference was a big success in terms of involvement of SCMR, ASCI and companies like Heart flow recognizing potentials of Indian cardiac imaging specialists.

It was in the Mumbai conference where our current president Dr Hemant   Telkar introduced the “Indian calcium score registry”.

No cardiac scan can be successful in the absence of experienced technical mind driving the machine. The need for educating cardiac CT and MRI technicians was rightly emphasised up by Dr.Vimal Raj. He introduced cardiac imaging technician workshop in the New Delhi annual conference in 2018, which was very well appreciated.

The 9th Annual conference at Jaipur took IACI to a new level with enormous academic contribution from SCMR, ASCI and the industry giving us insight into the future technology and the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in cardiac imaging.

The annual conferences significantly impact both novices and experienced cardiac imagers on all aspects of cardiac imaging. In contrast, the rigorous two-day midterm conferences dedicated to a specific topic help those who look to delve into the depths of cardiac imaging.

While the Ahmedabad and Hyderabad midterm conferences concentrated on the subtler aspects of cardiac CT, the mid-term conference at Vizag dealt exclusively with CMR learning.

A usually feared aspect of cardiac imaging is paediatric cardiac imaging. ”Look beyond” was IACI midterm conference organised at Wadia children’s hospital, which included mind-blowing sessions on all aspect of paediatric cardiac imaging. Credits to Dr Alpa Bharathi and her team of faculty including a cardiac radiologist, cardiologist, cardiac pathologist and cardiac surgeon for giving multidimensional approach to the paediatric cardiac imaging.

All these are feathers in the cap of IACI as a team. Apart from these, there are other conferences, groups, presentations and lectures that many members of the IACI participate. This diverse involvement is encouraged as a core value of the IACI, which are experimenting, learning, educating and in the process of growing cardiac imaging in India.

We should never forget that learning is a continuous process and change is the only constant.

Welcome to CARDIAC IMAGING in INDIA.
